10 things to check before you book a holiday

A simple checklist before paying for a holiday: passport, visas, total price, baggage, hotel location, cancellation rules and payment safety.

Before you pay for a holiday, check your passport and entry rules, the total price including extras, the baggage and cancellation rules, and who exactly you are paying.

The checklist

  1. Passport validity. Many countries need several months of validity left after you return. Check the rule for your destination.
  2. Visa and entry rules. Check the official government source for your nationality. Rules change, and some countries need an online authorisation before you fly.
  3. Names. Every traveller's name must match their passport exactly.
  4. Total price. Ask what is included and what is not: bags, seats, transfers, resort or city taxes, and any service fee.
  5. Baggage. Check the checked bag and cabin bag allowance for every flight in the trip. See our guide to fare types and baggage.
  6. Hotel location. Look at the real distance to the beach, centre or sights, not just the name of the area. Read recent guest reviews on independent sites.
  7. Cancellation and change rules. Know the deadline and the cost before you pay. Cheap fares and rooms are often non-refundable.
  8. Health and safety. Check your government's travel advice and any vaccine or health requirements.
  9. Insurance. Arrange travel insurance from a regulated insurer. We do not sell insurance.
  10. Who you are paying. Check the company is registered and pay only into its business account. See how to spot travel booking scams.

Quick answers

How long should my passport be valid?

It depends on the destination. Many countries ask for several months after your return date. Check the official rule for where you are going.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is strongly advised. Buy it from a regulated insurer. Safarly does not sell insurance.

Rules, fees and entry requirements change. This guide is general information, not legal advice. Always check official sources and your supplier's terms before you book.
