eSIM or roaming: how to stay connected when you travel

What an eSIM is, how it compares with roaming and a local SIM, and what to check before you fly.

By the Safarly team · Updated 1 November 2026 · 4 min read

A travel eSIM gives your phone mobile data in another country without swapping your SIM card, often at a lower cost than roaming. Check that your phone supports eSIM first.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM. Instead of a plastic card, you add a data plan to your phone by scanning a QR code or tapping a link. Your normal number stays on your normal SIM, so people can still reach you on WhatsApp.

Check your phone first

Most newer phones support eSIM, but not all. Look in your phone settings for "Add eSIM" or "Mobile plans", and make sure your phone is not locked to one network.

eSIM, roaming or a local SIM?

  • Roaming: easy, because nothing changes, but your network may charge more. Check your provider's daily charge before you go.
  • Travel eSIM: you buy a data plan for the country or region before you fly. Many people set it up at home and switch it on when they land.
  • Local SIM: can be cheap, but you have to find a shop, may need ID, and you swap your own SIM out.

Before you buy

Compare how much data you get, how many days it lasts, and which countries it covers. Keep your phone's data roaming for your home SIM switched off so you do not pay twice.

Quick answers

Will my WhatsApp number change with an eSIM?

No. A travel eSIM only adds mobile data. Your own number stays on your normal SIM.

Can I set up an eSIM before I travel?

Usually yes. Many people install it at home and switch it on when they land. Check the provider's instructions.
