Car hire abroad: a simple checklist

What to check before you rent a car in another country: licence, insurance cover, fuel policy, deposit and extras.

By the Safarly team · Updated 1 November 2026 · 5 min read

Before you hire a car abroad, check your driving licence rules, what the price includes, the fuel and mileage policy, and how big the deposit is.

1. Driving licence and age

Check whether your licence is accepted in the country you are visiting, and whether you need an international driving permit. Some companies charge more for younger drivers.

2. What does the price include?

Look for cover for damage and theft, extra drivers, airport fees and taxes. A very low headline price can grow once these are added.

3. Fuel and mileage

A "full to full" policy is usually the simplest: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Check whether there is a daily mileage limit.

4. The deposit

Most companies hold a deposit on a credit card. Make sure the card has enough available balance, and ask when the hold is released.

5. At pick-up

Walk around the car with the agent and photograph any scratches before you drive away. Keep the rental agreement with you.

Quick answers

Do I need an international driving permit?

It depends on the country and your licence. Check the rules of the country you are visiting before you travel.

Why is there a deposit?

The company holds it in case of damage, fuel or fines. It is normally released after you return the car.

Rules, fees and entry requirements change. This guide is general information, not legal advice. Always check official sources and your supplier's terms before you book.
